Do differential covers actually do anything?

Separating the real benefits from the marketing.

The genuine benefits are impact protection for the ring gear and, on finned aluminium covers, some additional heat dissipation under sustained load.

Extra fluid capacity claims are usually small in practice. Fins help most in heavy towing and slow technical work where oil temperature climbs and airflow is low.

If you never load the vehicle heavily and never hit rocks, a cover is cosmetic. If you do either, it is cheap insurance for the most expensive part of the axle.
